Vision
The present moment is critical for the future of public education. Working conditions are deteriorating with an increase of violence in schools, funding is being cut, and e-learning is about to change our highschools forever. Status quo is no longer a safe expectation. The landscape of teaching and the role of this union has greatly changed since the pandemic. I believe that we need fresh leadership and new ideas to address the challenges our members face today. I promise to move our union forward in the ways that serve everyone’s needs, while staying true to the strong principles that have built the Hamilton Secondary Unit (HSU).
Video: My appearance at the microphone at OECTA AGM 2025, where I won the Horst Schweinbenz Silver Palate Award.
From the award committee: "It is reserved for a delegate (or group of delegates) who distinguish themselves at an AGM microphone. In asking your question, you reminded us of our history, our collective strength, and the work done by many of the people that were at the AGM in years past."
Empowering the Membership
I believe in a leadership approach that empowers the membership to actively participate in decision-making and strategy. This requires easy and accessible communication and information, which is why I revived the HSU Website (Members Only password: HSUoecta). With just a few clicks you can catch up on what was discussed at an Executive meeting, review how your sick banks work, browse your Collective Agreement, and much more. When members are knowledgeable and engaged, it is an investment in our long-term sustainability and collective power. I believe in an HSU where all members feel involved, valued, and informed.Sensible Spending and Investment in the Membership
The Gift Plan is secured for the short term, but it is imperative that decisions continue to be made to maintain its security for future generations. In order to sustain 3% growth, we must have a sufficient injection into the fund. In 2011, the unit levy was raised by $5 per pay to help sustain the fund - a necessary move, but one that came from the pockets of the membership. I sat on committees that looked at our budget, and our gift plan, and proposed dissolving the HSU Scholarship. After consulting with the membership, the HSU Executive voted in agreement and $15,000 can now be injected into the fund on an annual basis. I believe in efficient and frugal governance in order serve current and future HSU members.Health and Safety Standards
Over 40,000 OCT certified individuals are currently not teaching because they are leaving the profession. Violence in schools is at an all-time high which impacts our day to day working conditions. We are one of the only units in the province that does not have its members participate in a Health and Safety Committee despite all costs and liability handled by the Board. Currently, our Health and Safety Reps are Vice Principals and Chaplains. It doesn’t make any sense to have management or other staff representing our interests in this matter. In September 2025, the Brebeuf staff will officially have a Health and Safety Rep who is a teacher — because the best person to advocate for our working conditions is one of us! My hope is that the HSU shares this vision and raises Health and Safety standards across the rest of the highschools. You deserve it.Local Unity
I have seen the respect and influence the HSU has at provincial AGM conventions, and we deserve that same reputation locally. In the recent provincial election, conservatives won 3 out of 5 Hamilton seats for the first time since 1995. If we want things to change, we must use our collective strength. The threat of a general strike during CUPE's job action and the fight to protect the Greenbelt showed how the power of united workers can make Doug Ford back down. If we want support when it's our time to fight, we need to be there for our allies as well - which is why I will push for the HSU to get more involved with local labour unions. Our shared solidarity helps build a more connected, coordinated, and powerful labour movement.
